Smart Mare

"Mmmmm yeah, I decline the opportunity to go outside today."
--Peg

Yesterday, in the midst of freezing rain and 40mph winds, I felt sorry for the only three horses who aren't set up to be fed in their run-in shed (Peg, Marlene and Cody--because they are a-holes who fight about it too much) and brought them into the box stalls.

They were undeniably happy. Everyone took long naps lying flat out in their stalls, reveled in the comforts of zero mud, rain and wind and generally enjoyed their time inside. I went out last night after Evie as asleep and gave everyone a good brushing, which just added to their joys at "Hotel de Dalarna Farm".

The weather was crummy most of the morning here but at about 2pm, the sun broke through and the wind went down a bit. I figured they would all be a bit cabin feverish by then and went to let everyone out (which in our barn means just opening the back door and then stall doors).

Cody went out first, followed by a ready to run Marlene. The gamboled about (yes, even ancient Cody!) and rolled and were generally happy to enjoy the sunshine.

But Peg?

Peg was having none of it.

She refused to leave the barn and begged and begged and BEGGED to be allowed to stay in. She would go no further than this until I finally drug her outside. Then she immediately went to the run-in shed and pouted. She spent the rest of the afternoon alternating from the shed to the fence closest to the house, where she stared directly into the windows. If she caught sight of me at all, she would trot around the back of the barn and wait to be let in.

I finally relented at feed time and let her in. She was completely unconcerned at being the lone horse inside and settled into her stall with great satisfaction. This is one smart and independant horse who knows her own mind.
